چکیده

The use of CO2 under pressure (dense CO ) is one of the most promising techniques to achieve cold pasteurization and/or sterilization of liquid and solid materials, and is likely to replace or partially substitute currently and widely applied thermal processes. Although the ability of CO2 to inactivate microorganisms has been known since the 1950s, only within the last 15 years it has received special attention, and the scientific and economic interest towards practical applications is presently growing more and more. Here we collect and discuss the relevant current knowledge about the potentials of dense CO2 as a non-thermal technology in the field of microbial inactivation. We summarize the state of the art, including definitions, description of the equipment, relevant applications, in both simple suspensions and complex media, for the treatment of a wide range of microorganisms in both liquid and solid substrates. Finally, we also summarize and discuss the different hypotheses about the mechanisms of inactivation. B 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biotechnol Bioeng 84: 627–638, 2003.

Inactivation combined with cell lysis of Pseudomonas putida using a low pressure carbon dioxide microbubble technology

BACKGROUND Inactivation processes can be classified into non-thermal inactivation methods such as ethylene oxide and γ-radiation, and thermal methods such as autoclaving. The ability of carbon dioxide enriched microbubbles to inactivate Pseudomonas putida suspended in physiological saline, as a non-thermal sterilisation method, was investigated in this study with many operational advantages ove...

Dense Phase Carbon Dioxide Processing of Liquid Foods: a Review

Dense Phase Carbon Dioxide (DPCD) is a non-thermal process that pasteurizes mostly liquid foods. It inactivates vegetative bacterial cells, some spores, yeasts and molds, some viruses, and some enzymes. The traditional approach to develop a DPCD process for a new product involves a complex experimental plan to investigate microbial and safety effects. Recent studies show the importance of the s...

Surface Decontamination by Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma

Background: Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), a source of non-thermal plasma, is used in surface decontamination. Objective: To study the effect of DBD plasma treatment, we evaluated the effect of plasma exposure time on inactivation of Bacillus subtilis. Results: Applying the DBD plasma to the culture of B. subtilis caused complete sterilization of the surface without any thermal effects. In...

Inactivation of Escherichia coli (ATCC 4157) in diluted apple cider by dense-phase carbon dioxide.

Dense-phase carbon dioxide (CO2) treatments in a continuous flow through system were applied to apple cider to inactivate Escherichia coli (ATCC 4157). A response surface design with factors of the CO2/product ratio (0, 70, and 140 g/kg), temperature (25, 35, and 45 degrees C), and pressure (6.9, 27.6, and 48.3 MPa) were used. E. coli was very sensitive to dense CO2 treatment, with a more than ...

Dense CO2: An Innovative Method for Sterilization of Venous Catheters at Low Temperature

Venous catheters are important medical devices which are more and more employed in medical treatment. After use, they are currently not re-used, a practice which is very expensive due to their cost. For this reason it is very interesting to be able to set up a sterilizing technology that permit to re-use them without changing their physical properties and the microbial adhesion. The methods usu...
